"What school does this house go to?" is one of the first questions I get from families, and in St. Mary's County the answer depends on the exact address, not the town name on the listing. Two homes a mile apart can feed into different schools. Here's how school zones work here and how to check one in a couple of minutes.
Every public school in the county is part of St. Mary's County Public Schools (SMCPS). There's no separate town district to sort out. What changes from street to street is which elementary, middle, and high school a home is assigned to.
When I send homes to buyers who care about schools, I check the assignment on every one, so you don't have to fall in love first and find out later.
Military families have a couple of extra tools. The Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children, which every state has joined, is meant to smooth things like enrollment, records, and graduation requirements when kids change schools mid-stream. Your installation's School Liaison can also help you with enrollment questions before you arrive. Pair that with my PCS buyer checklist so the house and the school line up with your report date.
Each of my town guides covers the schools in that area. Start with Lexington Park, California, Great Mills, Leonardtown, or Mechanicsville, then confirm the exact address with the SMCPS tool.
Even if school isn't on your list, it's on plenty of future buyers' lists. When you sell, the next family will check the same tool. That's one more reason to know a home's assignment before you buy, and it's part of what I factor in when I value a St. Mary's home.
Homes near the edge of a school zone deserve an extra check. Look the exact address up in the SMCPS tool, and if school is a deciding factor, call the school system to confirm before you commit. Boundaries can be adjusted over time, so the assignment you see today is the one to trust, not a neighbor's memory of where their kids went years ago.

Use SMCPS's Find a School by Your Address tool, and check it before you write an offer. Assignments follow the street address, not the town name. Tell me what you're looking for and I'll check schools on every home I send you.
Boundaries can be adjusted over time, so always confirm the current assignment for the exact address. It's on the checklist in my St. Mary's County buyer's guide.
